 Oculoplastics - What is it?

Oculoplastic surgeons are fully trained ophthalmologists (eye surgeons), with subspecialty training in eyelid / oculoplastic surgery. An oculoplastic surgeon focuses only on the periocular area, and can treat all functional eyelid problems such as eyelid malposition, ptosis or “droopy lids” along with skin cancers and other malignancies in the eye area and eye socket.

Due to ophthalmology training being part of the oculoplastic surgeon’s repertoire, they can examine the eye and detect any vision problem. Eye problems which may be associated with eyelid or orbital conditions can be recognised and treated. Oculoplastic surgeons can examine the eye postoperatively to ensure there are no complications and can treat any eye complications should they arise.
